Sun, sand, drinks, and … puppies? As Liz Lemon would say, "I want to go to there." If you asked me to describe my dream vacation, I would say it would be to a tropical island filled with puppies.
Amazingly enough, a place like that actually exists! What??? Seriously??? Yes! It’s called Providenciales and it’s located in Turks and Caicos.

American pet parents—a whopping 78% of them—love traveling with their pets. Most even view their four-legged friends as family members who have the same needs as us, so it makes sense that the thinking is that they'd need some time to get away and decompress too. Fortunately, the travel industry has taken notice and has made it even easier to travel with ALL members of the family. Summer has barely begun but it’s shaping up to be a busy travel season, with estimates of almost 75% of Americans planning to travel domestically. And get this—more than half of all pet owners will take their pets along with them! Going on vacation with our pets is becoming more and more common. A recent survey found that 7% of pet owners will only travel to destinations that are pet-friendly. I used to be in that category. When we first brought Beezy home almost nine years ago, I refused to go anywhere without her. I couldn’t stand the thought of her being sad and alone in a dank, cold kennel. I wanted her right next to me, all day, every day. There may have been some projection happening there. Over the years, she visited a lot of places with us. And, while I wouldn’t trade a single minute of it, I will admit that I prefer to travel without any members of the herd these days. Snapshots of Beezy on vacation: Back then, things were only starting to move into the pro-pet territory we see now. You felt lucky to find a hotel, let alone a nice one, that welcomed dogs on the premises. And that’s pretty much where your luck ended. Stores, restaurants, and other amenities in the area weren’t nearly as progressive. You were welcome to walk around town with your pooch, maybe get a seat on a bench in a park where you could eat your takeout lunch, and then you could go straight back to your hotel because you weren’t going anywhere else. Hiking, walking, and outdoor sightseeing treks were acceptable for pets. But really immersing yourself in the area’s culture? Not so much. But as Bob Dylan said, the time’s they are a-changin’. Now, you and Fido can explore the sights and sounds almost anywhere without anyone raising an eyebrow. And, believe it or not, there are hotels now that specifically cater to you and your four-legged bestie. And if you’re like me and prefer not to travel with your own fur ball, but still long for some canine companionship, there are options for you as well! From loaner shelter pets to fosters on the premises, some hotels and destinations have thrown their hats firmly into the pet arena. In our On The Road series, we’ll explore everything from exotic vacation destinations to posh city spaces. The one constant? You guessed it—dogs! Our first featured destination will be Potcake Place, which might actually be heaven on earth. Not familiar with it? Well, prepare yourself to be smitten. Until next time, WOOF!
